The Shuswap Indians named the place Kamloops, because of the way it served as a meeting point for the area's mighty rivers. The name stuck, and with time it's grown even more appropriate. Lodged in the heart of British Columbia's mountainous "high country" interior, Kamloops is the junction not only for rivers, but for national railroads and main highways. In a lot of ways it's grown to be a pit stop for industry and for travellers to and from Canada's west coast. But some 75,000 people have found more than enough reason to call it home. Surrounded by lakes and by rounded, near-desert mountains, Kamloops offers great recreation (the famed Shuswap Lakes vacation area is nearby), vast natural resources, and a temperature pleasing to residents and lucrative cash crops, notably ginseng - destined for Asia and Canada's health food market. They also grow hockey players here, with the local Blazers annually one of the country's top junior squads.
