Kaohsiung is an industrial center and seaport on Taiwan's southwest coast. It's Taiwan's second largest city, with a population of 1.42 million. Kaohsiung leads the nation in steel, cement and petrochemical production. Meanwhile, two-thirds of Taiwan's import-export volume passes through the local harbor. Kaohsiung has a reputation as a military and blue collar town. That perception is changing, however, given recent growth in higher education, the new Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Neiweipi Cultural Park, and a lively local music scene. Unbridled growth in recent years has been good for the economy, if not Kaohsiung's environment. Traffic congestion is a problem in the city, while air and water quality in and around Kaohsiung has been ranked as Taiwan's worst. Tourists are attracted to the Shoushan Zoo and wildlife park east of the city, and Lotus Lake, with its Confucian Temple and the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas.
