In the first half of the '90s, Kelowna grew by some 30,000 residents - pushing the population past 90,000. Countless more, having seen what B.C.'s Okanagan area has to offer, are no doubt hoping to follow. They're attracted to the endless shoreline of Lake Okanagan, the low, round and dry mountains that line the interior B.C. valley, acres and acres of fruit orchards and vineyards, and a four-season climate more forgiving than the rest of Canada. Long the land of hunter-gatherer Okanagan Indians, fur traders were the first whites in the area, followed in the 1850s by missionaries who settled the area and named it Kelowna, after the Indian word for Grizzly Bear. These days, Kelowna's main drivers are the fruit and wine industries (some local white wines have topped Europe and California's best at big time tasting competitions), and tourism (great beaches, golf courses and ski hills). Less known, but paying a lot of bills, is a forestry industry hard at work in the mountains east and west of the valley.
