Known during British rule as Port Florence, Kisumu is Kenya's third largest city, with a population of around 150,000. Perched on the lip of Lake Victoria, the city has long been one of Kenya's anchor cities. The Uganda Railway, which gave birth to the much younger city of Nairobi a century ago, was built to span the nation from Port Florence to Mombasa. Train travelers across the continent still often stop at the major terminus of Kisumu. Ferries depart regularly to and from Kisumu and southern Kenyan ports of Kendu Bay and Homa Bay, which also border the lake; but recreational watersports that involvegetting wet (or even strolling the grassy shores) are strictly discouraged: The nasty parasite bilharzia is common in the water and along the shoreline. Biologists andecologists studying the lake and its threatened ecosystem often use Kisumu as a base for their studies. The regional capital, Kisumu reveals surprising delights to travelers who take the time to stay a few days before moving inland to the safari parks. The Kisumu Museum isconsidered by many to be one of Kenya's finest collections, exhibiting displays on wildlife as well as native Luo culture. The city also boasts some of Kenya's largest,liveliest marketplaces. On the outskirts of town, attractions range from Hippo Point, at Dunga, just south of Kisumu, known for its eponymous hippopotami (not to mention crocodiles -- don't goswimming!), to Jamhuri Gardens, with lovely grounds for strolling and studying indigenous plants and flowers.
