Besides having one of the U.S.'s most musical city names, Kokomo is known for its firsts -- the first car in America (Elwood Haynes, 1894), the first mechanical corn picker (John Powell, early 1920s) and the first canned tomato juice (Kemp Brothers Canning Company, 1928). Delco Electronics, which has its world headquarters in Kokomo, may be thanked for many of those firsts. Delco developed the push-button car radio and the all-transistor car radio. Kokomo, a north-central Indiana city of 45,000, is also home to a Chrysler transmission factory and the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company. What's more, Kokomo boasts the world's largest steer - Old Ben. This Hereford that reputedly weighed more than 4,700 pounds is now stuffed and on exhibit at Highland Park. On a more cultured note, Kokomo is the site of a branch of Indiana University, as well as several museums and a symphony orchestra. Finally, back to the city's name. It came from the chief of the Miami tribe, which once lived in the area. Hey, that might be another first.
