Its sub-tropical climate and the blooming of flowers year-round has made Kunming "the city of eternal spring." The capital of China's southern Yunnan Province is also a mile-high city, situated on a plateau 6,300 feet above sea level. With a history going back some 2,000 years, Kunming got its name during Kublai Kahn's 13th century occupation of the city. During World War II, the Allies transported crucial supplies to Kunming via the Burma Road, and the Flying Tigers landed here on their famous "over the hump" sorties. Kunming is Yunnan's economic and cultural capital, and home to 1.5 million people. Fertile soil throughout the region makes for bountiful crops. A provincial university facilitates learning and research. Area factories turn out textiles, electronic goods, processed food (e.g. dried ginger, tea, bamboo shoots), and tobacco. Kunming's natural attractions are highlighted by surrounding hills, said to appear as curves of a sleeping beauty, her hair flowing down into Kuanchi Lake -- China's sixth largest. And 53 miles southeast of town is the Stone Forest, with its eerie limestone landscapes. April visitors can enjoy Kunming's Winter Water Splashing Festival.
