NAFTA has done wonders for this bordertown at the crossroads of life and business in the U.S. and Mexico. The first non-missionary, non-military Spanish settlement in North America, Laredo is now the fastest-growing city in Texas (and the second fastest-growing city in the U.S.). Visitors can tour historic buildings on either side of the border, including the capital of the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande, now located in downtown Laredo. Downtown Laredo is a mere block away from the Rio Grande, beyond which lies the Mexican sister city, Nuevo Laredo. Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Monterrey, Mexico, are all equidistant from the city by 150 miles. Texas A&M acknowledged Laredo's unique setting years ago by making it the home of its International University. The location naturally provides for a vibrant bilingual and bicultural community, something for which Laredo prides itself. The tropical climate is attractive to many, as well. Because of the climate, golf and tennis are the big recreational activities.
