Geographically, Launceston is nearly a perfect place to live. Its sits on the Tamar River, where two forks of the River Esk converge. The Cataract Gorge Reserve, a narrow canyon sliced by the river, is a 15 minute walk from downtown. Parks and gardens are plentiful. Four seasons visit Launceston (much to the relentless teasing from mainlanders), but none of them are harsh. It boasts the same amount of sun and less rain than Sydney. The city is Tasmania's second largest (about 100,000 in the greater area) and the country's third oldest. Like Hobart, it has quite a European flair. The architecture is a mix of Georgian, Victorian and modern. It's quite proud of its art gallery, a centerpiece for the arts in the town. It is the largest gallery outside a capital city in Australia. And while we're on superlatives: the surrounding valleys make Launceston Australia's apple capital. Those valleys are also on the doorstep to the World Heritage Area Wilderness, which includes a large chunk of western Tasmania. When settlers moved to Tasmania, they quickly killed off the indigenous culture. Flora and fauna faired much better, and now, Tasmania's island species live in habitat that is protected under the world heritage status.
