Lausanne has a mix of Switzerland's rural and urban charm. The city of 250,000 is situated in the country's French speaking sector, about 45 minutes east of Geneva by rail. Rising from the north shore of spectacular Lac L?man (a.k.a. Lake Geneva), vineyards line Lausanne's outskirts, the Alps are within view, while a mild climate and numerous parks encourage year-round recreation. Lausanne's history dates back to the Roman occupation, when it was an important crossroads between Italy and northern Europe. Its cathedral in the Old Town is an excellent example of the Gothic style, and other architectural attractions include the 15th century Castle of St. Maire. Modern Lausanne features a lively academic and cultural scene. Avant-garde and traditional theater is complemented by numerous festivals throughout the year. Those include the renowned International Jazz Festival in nearby Montreaux. Important learning and research continues at the University of Lausanne (founded in the 16th century), as well as the Swiss Federal Insitute of Technology. Lausanne is also an Olympic city, sort of. The International Olympic Committee headquarters is here, featuring a lovely park and museum, and Lausanne serves as host for the 1997 World Figure Skating Championships. Not a surprising choice of venue by those athletic administrators, even given a world of other choices.
