To an outsider, Laval may seem nothing more than a bedroom community to adjacent Montreal. But Laval can stand very much on its own. A commercial centre that encompasses many smaller towns and villages on the Ile Jesus, Laval is known both for a dynamic local economy and for the simple pleasures of touring quaint neighborhoods. Laval's big attraction, in town, is the Cosmodome science and technology centre. Just out of town, the big draw is the Laurentians, or Laurentides, as Francophones call the modest mountains and dense mixed forests that serve as a four-season playground for urban dwellers. There is great skiing, cross-country or downhill, at numerous resorts. In the summer the resorts offer golf. And in the fall, the area is clogged with people who come to see the leaves of maples turn from green to a stunning crimson red.
