Nagoya is sort of the Cleveland of Japan -- a big, bustling metropolis right in the heart of the country that doesn't get as much respect as it deserves. Many Japanese think of Nagoya as little than a stop on the bullet train as you head west from Tokyo. This city of two million (roughly the size of Chicago) was founded about 300 years ago by one of the legendary Tokugawa shoguns and has been active with Japanese culture and history ever since. The city is acutely aware of its image problem, and is doing its best to upgrade. The most recent evidence is the new Nagoya Dome, a state-of-the-art domed stadium that'll serve as home to the city's proud baseball franchise, the Chunichi Dragons. The Dragons are owned by the Chunichi Shimbun, Japan's top newspaper outside of Tokyo. Admittedly, Nagoya may lack the racing pulse of Tokyo, the lyricism of Hiroshima, the post-industrial craziness of Osaka or the ancient beauty of Kyoto. But Nagoya is a city developing its own kind of charisma, and is developing to become one of Japan's key centers in the coming century.
