Immortalized by Melville and Poe, Nantucket has long been associated with the whaling industry (and some limerick they'd probably just as soon forget). Now, thankfully, the whaling industry has been replaced by the whale-watching industry, and tourism and the arts dominate this small island off the coast of Cape Cod. Sometimes called "The Faraway Island" and sometimes called "Little Gray Lady of the Seas," Nantucket has a native population of 6,000, and a summertime population of 40,000. Visitors arrive by ferry mostly, some to fish for bluefish, chappy and striped bass; some to windsurf and sail; some to paint the lighthouses. Nantucket boasts of being the only place in the country with the same name for the town, the county and the island, and their complete lack of stoplights is a point of pride. They seem to like simplicity, covering most of their houses with gray shingles to match the frequent fog. Besides its natural beauty, Nantucket is rich in maritime history, and the Whaling Museum there has over 10,000 photographs in its collection.
