"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:47) Well... this city in the Galilee region of north Israel was where the angel, Gabriel, announced to a virgin, Mary, that she would bear a special child. And Nazareth served as the hometown of Jesus Christ throughout his first 20 years. Yet, Nazareth's history goes way back beyond the New Testament, as archeological evidence suggests the city's surrounds have been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The adjacent Jezreel Valley was a natural battlefield, with control of the ancient Galilee hillside accorded to victors. Among many other nearby sites of historical and religious significance is the town of Cana, of Wedding Feast fame. Modern Nazareth is Israel's largest Arab city, with around 60,000 people. About half those residents are Christians, and the other half Moslems. Until recent efforts, supplemented by governmental funding, the sacred infrastructure of Nazareth was in disrepair, but rennovation is now underway under the auspices of the Nazareth 2,000 Project for the Millennium. Being a focal point of the Holy Land in general, Nazareth is blessed with specific attractions such as the Church of St. Joseph's Carpentry (believed to be the Holy Family's original home and workshop), the Mount of the Leap of the Lord (where legend has it that locals once tried to toss Jesus into the abyss), and Swiss Mountain (that's right), an ultra-modern tourism project.
