Though much of New Zealand earns the tag of "outdoors paradise" it's particularly apt for the town of Nelson and the surrounding region. Tucked into the northwest corner of the South Island, across a stretch of ocean from Wellington, the Nelson area is in easy striking distance of three national parks - Abel Tasman with its coastal tramping, Nelson Lakes with its ski fields and mountains, and Kahurangi with its vast wilds. It's also the sunniest place in Kiwi-dom, and blessed with endless golden beaches perfect for catching those rays - with sunblock, of course. All that sunshine contributes to a prosperous fruit-growing industry, dominated by apple orchards. There's also a small cottage wine industry and several microbreweries, that undoubtedly slake the thirst of rugby players. It was at Nelson where the game - just about a holy pursuit among Kiwis - was first played in New Zealand.
