"The City of Steeples" has the marks of another era. Not only is Cumberland a showplace of Victorian architecture, a steam-powered train still heads out of out of town. It makes it up 1,300 feet of spectacular Maryland mountain scenery, to nearby Frostburg, home of Frostburg State University. Cumberland began as a Potomac River trading post. Commerce increased when it became a crossroads for the railroad, U.S. Highway 40 (the original interstate, a.k.a. "National Road"), and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. The C & O Canal towpath has recently been converted into a recreation route for cyclers, walkers and joggers.
