Buffalo Bill slept here. North Platte is proud to be known as Buffalo Bill Cody's home from 1879 to 1913. Buffalo Bill Scout's Rest Ranch is a state historical park where the frontiersman's house and outbuildings look much the same as when he lived here. As the virtual midpoint between Chicago and Salt Lake City, and the half-way marker between Omaha and Denver, North Platte has been a stopping point along the Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, Pony Express, Overland Trail, and the Union Pacific Railroad. Today, the city, which was founded in 1873 and designated a division point for the Union Pacific Railroad, is home to Bailey Yard, which, according to The Guinness Book of World Records, is the world's largest railroad yard. Cowboys and railroads, however, aren't the only things North Platte's population of 24,500 is proud of. This western Nebraska city (Platte means flat or shallow) has recently expanded its Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
