Legend says Robin Hood roamed Nottinghamshire somewhere around 1190; today, money still accumulates in his name. Nottingham is not shy about promoting its most legendary outlaw, nor should it be. Visitors to this now modern city can walk along Maid Marion Way, or venture out of town to hike around Sherwood Forest Country Park (it's about 450 acres, considerably smaller than Robin Hood's former haunt of 100,000 or so acres). Nottingham Castle was built in 1068 by William the Conquerer, then destroyed by Cromwell in the Civil War. Today the castle is more a mansion, which houses a museum and art gallery. Visitors can also wander through Wollaton Hall, which was built for a wealthy merchant in 1588; today it's a natural history museum. Legends and castles aside, the world also knows Nottinghamshire for its lace industry and its famous local poet, D.H. Lawrence. He was born in the village of Eastside and tied deeply to the surrounding countryside.
