Utah has a reputation for being, shall we say, strait-laced. Brigham Young, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, strict liquor laws - you get the idea. But don't be fooled. Fun can be found along with clean livin', especially in the Ogden area. With the Great Salt Lake to the west and the Wasatch mountains to the east, Ogden offers year-round recreational activities. Some of the best skiing in the world is available at resorts such as Snowbasin (17 miles east of Ogden) and Powder Mountain (19 miles northeast). Hot springs and hiking areas abound; other area action includes canoeing, biking, fishing and cliff diving (yes, cliff diving). The Ogden River Parkway is a 3-mile corridor featuring paths, picnic areas and the Eccles Dinosaur Garden. Among the local institutions are Weber State University, Hill Air Force Base (with nearly 12,000 civilian employees) and the Internal Revenue Service (4,300 employees). The joining of the transcontinental railroad at nearby Promontory in 1869 turned Ogden into a hub of commerce. The city of 64,000 remains such, with aerospace and defense industries providing much of the employment. Salt Lake City offers big city attractions some 30 miles south.
