Thanks to Fyodor Dostoevsky, Omsk, Siberia's second largest city, may always be best remembered as a place of misery. One of Siberia's oldest cities, Omsk was founded as a Cossack outpost in 1716, and evidence of its well-fortified past remains intact: The Old Fort (built in 1716) and NewFort (built in the late 18th century) are both preserved and open to the public.
