Pittsfield is a piece of urban life in one of the country's most idyllic regions -- Berkshire County in western Massachusetts. To folks in Boston, the Berkshires are barely Massachusetts. And in truth, the region has more in common with Upstate New York than Beacon Hill. One of the main things it shares with the state to the left are New Yorkers, many of whom make summer sojourns to the Berkshires for the Williamstown Theatre Festival and for the music at Tanglewood, in nearby Lenox. The city of Pittsfield was hit hard by the recession of the '80s. The grand movie theaters and department stores of North Street have been replaced by malls and multiplexes on the outskirts of town. Nonetheless, this is still the center of the Berkshires with some of the best skiing and hiking in the east. Those inclined toward relaxation amble down to Wahconah Park; there they savor a hot dog while the minor league Pittsfield Mets play ball and the sun sets over the purple Berkshire Hills.
