The Andaman & Nicobar Islands arc north to south over a 500 mile expanse in the Bay of Bengal. Well off India's southeast coast, this tropical archipelago consists of around 300 islands, most of which are uninhabited. The harbor town of Port Blair on South Andaman is the state capital. The northern Andamans are populated mostly by Indians. Situated to the south are the Nicobar Islands, where approximately 12,000 aboriginal tribesfolk still make their home. The culture and land rights of those indiginous people are threatened by development pressures attendant to a recent population boom on the Islands - from 50,000 to 300,000 over the past 20 years. Still, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been called "the perfect tropical paradise." Their white sand beaches and coral reefs are ideal for scuba divers and snorkelers, though it's paradise lost for non-Indian tourists after 30 days - the maximum stay allowed on required foreign travel permits. Rich tropical forests cover most of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. That's a temptation to dealers in the likes of teak and rosewood, as deforestation has become a hot issue here. Otherwise, with tourism and timber, the islands' economy is spurred by trade in coconuts, coffee, rubber and cashews.
