Liquids play lead roles in both Jinan and Qingdao. While Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, is famous as China's "City of Springs," Qingdao is known the world over for its brand-name beer. Situated on the Yellow River, Jinan is rich in artifacts testifying to its 2,600 year history. Nearby attractions include the birthplace of Confucius in the town of Qufu, and sacred Taishan (Mount Tai), which has inspired folk maxims and literary allusions throughout the ages. Situated on the eastern Yellow Sea coast, its 2.2 million people enjoy ocean views from just about anywhere in town, as well as easy access to the coastal Laoshan Mountains -- source of exported Laoshan mineral water and Qingdao Beer. Qingdao architecture reflects German and Japanese occupations from 1897-1945. Like its waters, the Shandong hinterlands are rich in minerals -- gold, diamond, copper, and iron. Its coastal climate is also great for growing grains, peanuts, tobacco, and fruits.
