Brittany is a land of contrasts. When its capital, Rennes, was razed by fire in 1720, the task of remodeling the city fell to Jacques Gabriel, a Parisian architect. Today, with its granite buildings, broad avenues and spacious squares, Rennes seems uncharacteristic of a province that is haunted with Celtic history and folklore, filled with the sound of the sea and strewn with Stonehenge-like ruins. Rennes' old quarter, with its surviving cobblestone streets and half-timbered, 15th- and 16th-century Renaissance and medieval houses, is by far the liveliest part of the city. Cafes, boutiques and crepe houses occupy many of the old buildings and it is here that revelers will find the most spirited nightlife. Rennes' Mus?e de Beaux-Arts houses one of the country's best collections of paintings outside Paris. For a taste of Breton history, visit the neighboring Mus?e de Bretagne. Brittany's contrasts permeate even the language. Up and down the Atlantic coast, French is juxtaposed with the tongue-twisting glottal syllables of Breton, a language closely related to Welsh. Unified with France in 1532, Brittany has often been maintained as a colony by Paris. Today the people still tend to treat France as a separate country and a regional effort is afoot to gain official recognition for the local language.
