Les meilleurs hôtels à Rhodes

Basking in the warm Aegean Sea, sun-drenched Rhodes is as rich in history, intrigue and ancient monuments as it is in beaches, wild Mediterranean scenery, welcoming resorts and other temptations. Inhabited since before the Bronze Age, the island has been fought over for nearly as long, a prize conquered by Persia, Athens, Alexander the Great, Rome and others. Fourteenth-century crusaders retired here and constructed the Byzantine main town and the spectacular Palace of the Grand Master (which stands guards over the town to this day) before Suleiman the Magnificent added the island to his Ottoman Empire. Now a Greek possession, Rhodes today is one of the country’s best-loved getaways.
Lawrence Durrell lived here in the 1940's and wrote Reflections on a Marine Venus as a guide to the island. Today, the largest of the Dodecanese islands is also the most touristed of the group. But for those willing to step off the beaten path, Durrell's Rhodes endures with its traditional fishing villages, quiet beaches (particularly to the south) and breath-taking countryside. With whitewashed houses clustered beneath a soaring castle-capped acropolis, Lindos is Rhodes' most picturesque village. Tourists flock here by the hundreds of thousands each summer to visit this ancient city, the island's most important Doric settlement because of its natural harbor and vantage point (it's built on a rock 125 meters above sea level). In the heart of the island's biggest city (also named Rhodes) is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe. The "old town" is a fascinating web of Byzantine, Turkish and Latin ruins. Its mighty fortifications provide the finest surviving examples of defensive architecture of the time. After you've had your fill of history, don't miss the Municipal Art Gallery at Symi Square in the old town for intriguing examples of contemporary Greek art. According to the Rodos News, the city of Rhodes has more discos per capita than London, Paris, New York, or Berlin. An international crowd of eighteen to thirty-somethings flock to the "new town" to dance the night away. Even if that's not your style but you're in the mood to reminisce, check out the discos for laser shows that rival Pink Floyd.
