Actually, the Gold Rush was born of Sacramento -- it was just outside of modern Sacramento that gold was discovered at the construction site for John Sutter's sawmill in 1848. Yellow fever spread quickly, and out of a relative wilderness was born a mining boom town. Today, gold for Sacramento comes in many forms; agriculture, higher education, the arts, museums and a thriving convention business (not to mention the chip rush of nearby Silicon Valley) have helped turn the city into one of the top 10 fastest-growing metropoli in the U.S. By the year 2000, the area expects to be home to more than 2 million people. Ninety miles northeast of San Francisco and an hour's flight from L.A., the city may not have the obvious natural lures of those coastal playgrounds, but its nicknames -- "City of Trees," "Camellia Capital of the World" and (our V-8 vote) "The Big Tomato" -- hint at the leafy charms of this park-filled city.
