Forget those messy creams and lotions. Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon reputedly discovered the real Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine. Today the city maintains a touristy fountain--its anti-aging effects aren't guaranteed. Ironically, St. Augustine is America's oldest city --founded 55 years before the Pilgrims showed up at Plymouth Rock and 42 years before Jamestown was colonized. The city houses many historical firsts: the Oldest Wooden School House, the Oldest Store Museum, America's first alligator farm. And the historic Victorian bed and breakfasts are rumored to be haunted. St. Augustine pays tribute to railroad magnate Henry Flagler for transforming the area into Florida's first resort, with historical structures restored instead of demolished, such as the elegant Ponce de Leon hotel. Flagler eventually threw the city over for Palm Beach, but his legacy remains in many city hotspots.
