More heads of the class hail from St. Cloud than any other U.S. city. According to Money magazine, St. Cloud has the highest high school graduation rate in the nation. Sixty or so miles northwest of the Twin Cities, St. Cloud takes advantage of its location at the head of the Mississippi River with a paper mill as well as dinner cruises (probably not in the winter, though, with an average January low temperature of minus 1.4 degrees). The city is the gateway to the lakes and forests of the area. Known as the Granite City for its major industry, it began as three settlements - one the home to former Southerners with slaves, one to German Catholics and one to anti-slavery Protestants. The disparate communities have come together in a city of about 50,000 and a tri-county area of more than three times that many. Local culture includes the New Tradition Theatre Company, the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, the Kiehle Visual Arts Center Gallery and the 92-acre Heritage Nature Center. On the education front are St. Cloud State University and the tandem of the College of Saint Benedict (for women) and Saint John's University (for men).
