There's a desolate beauty to St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Canada's oldest and most easterly city. Built around a natural harbor, St. John's has grown up on the largely barren green and grey hills along the water on the edge of the Avalon peninsula - next stops Greenland and Iceland. It's a blue collar city full of narrow streets, period buildings and colorful people. It's those characters - with their accents, customs and unique, self-deprecating humor who give St. John's its real charm. Already the government, business and academic capital, St. John's boosters are also working to develop the city as the jumping off point for a tourism industry that has never developed the way it likely should. With countless "outport" fishing villages (sometimes tagged with such unfathomable names as Dildo), fabulous whale and birdwatching, passing icebergs and ruins dating back to the Vikings, St. John's and Newfoundland should be on a lot more must-see lists.
