There's a curious mix to Saint John's heritage that's still evident in this south New Brunswick harbor city centuries later. French explorers first settled the area, naming the wide river that emptied into the Bay of Fundy after St. John the Baptist. English settlers gradually moved in and ultimately ousted the French "Acadians" of the area, who headed south to Louisiana and became "Cajuns." Thousands of British loyalists, no longer welcome in an independent America in 1783, set up along the river and triggered the incorporation of what is Canada's oldest city. And in the mid-19th century, thousands of Irish immigrants - forced across the Atlantic by the potato famine - found their way to Saint John, which now boasts being Canada's most Irish city. The harbor and its heritage remain the focal point here, with city boosters quick to point out Saint John has the world's highest tides - the difference from low to high tide is approximately 8.6 meters (28 feet). The tide is so powerful it actually turns back the river twice daily, causing the Reversing Falls. It's a business city, still producing ships, refined oil (from the wealthy and powerful Irving family) and famed Moosehead beer. And Saint John, like much of New Brunswick, is rich in scenery, heritage architecture, and the Acadians, Irish and French who call it home.
