The vintage barns of Quebec's Eastern Townships -- built with a unique round design to prevent the devil from cornering unsuspecting farmers -- serve as something of a metaphor for the region. No one has been able to back the region into a corner when it comes to cultural identity. History continues to have a major influence on the bi-cultural character of the Eastern Townships, made up of all the land south of the St. Lawrence River which was not granted under the French seigniorial system. Opened for settlement by the British in the early 1790s, Americans followed and in the 1840s a wave of French-Canadians who today dominate the population. The region's commitment to bi-cultural co-existence continues to be reflected in its government, its artistic community and in its two universities, Lennoxville's anglophone Bishop's University and the francophone University of Sherbrooke. Incorporated as a city in 1952, Sherbrooke is the regional capital of the Eastern Townships although Lennoxville functions as a center for anglophones. Both municipalities have much to offer in the way of museums and interpretation centers, while boasting beautiful valleys and wide open spaces.
