Stirling promoters quite often sing the praises of the city's "modern" facilities and attractions. Perhaps that's because the district is so heavily steeped in history, being Scotland's ancient capital. The mix of old and new is evident in the University of Stirling, near Bridge of Allan. King James VI conceived and proposed the "free college" in 1617. Then, a mere 350 years later, the University was founded, making it Scotland's most modern higher education institution. Centrally located where the Highlands meet the Lowlands, at the easiest crossing of the River Forth, Stirling is also known as Scotland's communications hub. Prominent landmarks include the Royal Palace of King James. Set upon a crag overlooking the Forth, it served as both fortress and regal dwelling. Stirling-folk engage in historic role playing. Downtown visitors might meet 16th century Lutheran reformer (and Stirling native) John Knox, for instance. Speaking of old churches, a medieval cathedral dominates local architecture in the town of Dunblane. A few miles west of there, Doune is of course known for its modern Motor Museum.
