Taiyuan is the capital of northeast China's Shanxi (not to be confused with Shaanxi) Province. Its strategic location on the Loess Plateau made Taiyuan the site of battles and fires that ruined the city more than once over the course of its 2,400 year history. Then Industrial Age marauders discovered that the Taiyuan Basin features the world's richest deposites of coal and iron ore. So it's no surprise that Taiyuan regional industry is centered around mining and steel production. Not to be mired in toil, however, Taiyuan is also famous for its locally distilled sprits. Architectural attractions around Taiyuan include the Twin Pagodas and several other monasteries. North of the city stands Mount Wutai, one of China's 4 Buddhist shrines, where restoration efforts are underway to undo the ravages of war and weather on some of more than 300 temples that once graced the terraced hillsides. As for modern urban culture, Taiyuan has an opera company and first-rate acrobatic troups.
