Lake Taupo has an explosive past. The largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Taupo nestles in a caldera formed during massive volcanic eruptions around 26,000 years ago. But that wasn’t the end of it -- the volcano has erupted 28 times since then. North of the lake are hot springs and the Craters of the Moon, where boardwalks link pools of boiling mud and vents belching sulfurous steam. The 238-square-mile (616-square-kilometer) lake is famed for sportfishing, and the Waikato River, which drains the lake, is known both for whitewater rafting and Huka Falls, where 58,100 gallons (220,000 liters) of water per second plunge through a narrow gorge.
