The late '50s discovery of one of the richest nickel deposits in the world prompted the rise of Thompson from the dense bush of northern Manitoba. The fortunes of Thompson rise and fall with nickel prices and the success of INCO, the city's largest employer. But Thompson is much more than a company town. Thompson has grown into a busy community of 15,000 (making it Manitoba's third largest center) with all the services available in other major centres. The most striking difference is that everything -- every house, every street sign, every sidewalk -- is relatively new. There is a golf course, fancy restaurants and art galleries. But the people who truly take to life in the near north learn to love such simple pursuits as canoeing and fishing, and the area is riddled with unspoiled waters.
