Thunder Bay has the right climate, both geographically and socially, for a place like the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. An annual snowfall of 222 centimetres and winter temperatures averaging -13 degrees Celsius support great skiing (the city has the province's only ski jump hill) and the world's largest snowmobile club - 3,000 members strong. Outdoor sports aren't the only game in town for Thunder Bay's 125,000 people. Athletes from the Thunder Bay Diving Club have made a splash across the country and globe. Perhaps the area's best-known athletic story, though, is about a British Columbia athlete who was passing through. Terry Fox ended his east-west cross-Canada run in aid of cancer research at mile 3,339, -- a relapse of his own cancer forcing the one-legged Canadian hero to give up his "Marathon of Hope". A section of the Trans-Canada Highway was re-named the Terry Fox Courage Highway and a monument was built in June 1982, nearly a year after Fox's death. Almost exactly at the center of the country, Thunder Bay is at the northwestern end of the St. Lawrence/Great Lakes seaway system. It's the western terminus of the ocean-going freighters that carry grain, potash and coal from the Canadian west. The massive terminals serving those ships dominate the skyline of the city, really an amalgamation of the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur.
