Everyone's seen those bumper stickers with the state slogan "I [heart] New York." Well, if New York had a heart, Utica would be it. Located smack in the middle of the state -- 233 miles from New York City and 190 miles from Buffalo -- Utica is the western gateway to the Adirondack Mountains. Utica's top attraction is the internationally acclaimed Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Museum of Art, which houses works by Picasso, Dali, Calder and others. The institute's annual summer festival is held in conjunction with the Good Old Summertime Festival and the Boilermaker Road Race. In addition to other galleries and museums, Utica is known for its musical societies. Outdoor activities are also abundant in area parks with facilities for everything from golf to skiing. Numerous lakes, state parks and campgrounds are within a short drive and, of course, the Adirondack Mountains offer plenty to explore. Settled on the site of Fort Schuyler and developed as an industrial center after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, Utica is a city of some 68,000 people. Oneida County (population 250,000) includes the city of Rome and the Oneida Indian Nation, and just to the south is Cooperstown (site of the Baseball Hall of Fame).
