Though much of modern Whitehorse's reputation rests on its historic association with the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98, in reality the town was only a stopover for the stampeders. For them, Dawson City was the promised land. But Whitehorse has played a key role in the history of the Yukon. In 1902, it became the eastern terminus of a railway to Skagway, Alaska (the line closed in 1982). As the head of navigation on the Yukon River, it was a busy port for mining barges and passenger steamboats (like the S.S. Klondike, which remains one of the city's prime tourist attractions). During the Second World War, it was a base for builders of the Canol Pipeline and the Alaska Highway. And mining - for gold, silver, lead, zinc, tungsten and copper - has always been the city's economic mainstay. Today, as the capital of the Yukon Territory, Whitehorse is a government and cultural centre and a hub for visitors seeking to experience the area's natural wonders. The summers are short, dry and actually hot; winters are long, dark and frigid. But whatever the season, hiking, skiing, dogsledding, canoeing, hot-springs bathing and mountaineering all are within easy reach of the city.
