You've heard of the Rust Belt, referring to what was once the Steel Belt? Well, Youngstown is the buckle of the Rust Belt. Located smack between Cleveland and Pittsburgh in northeast Ohio, Youngstown was a steel and iron center until the 1970s when the industry took a nosedive. Plant closings were devastating, wiping out 75 percent of Youngstown's steel jobs. Unemployment reached 30 percent, and the population, which peaked at 170,000 in 1930, plummeted to fewer than 96,000 by 1990. Some steel is still produced in Youngstown, along with a variety of other products. New industrial parks have created new jobs. But the Youngstown-Warren area is still trying to recover from the economic disaster of the 1970s. Meanwhile, the city can boast of the Butler Institute of American Art, the first structure built specifically to house a collection of American art. More than 40 exhibitions are on display each year at the Butler, which has remained free to the public for its entire 75-year existence.
