Along the lower Yellow River in east-central China, Henan Province is a cradle of Chinese civilization. Still heavily populated, Henan boasts three ancient Chinese capitals, one of which, Kaifeng, is a popular tourist destination. In the 10th to 12th centuries, Kaifeng was the Northern Song Dynasty seat, unsurpassed in wealth and splendor. Invasions and repeated Yellow River floods took their toll over the ages, yet landmarks like the Iron Pagoda hearken back to Kaifeng's glory days. The modern city is home to half a million people, some of whom are descendants of a distinguished local Jewish community. West of Kaifeng, in north-central Henan, is the provincial capital of Zhengzhou -- so established by the Communists in 1949, because of the city's importance as a railway junction. Since that time, Zhenzhou's population has increased from 100,000 to over a million. Fifty miles southwest of Zhengzhou, at the foot of Mount Songhan, lies another Chinese cultural treasure, the Shaolin Temple and Monastery, where the martial art of kung-fu originated. Henan's rich farmlands also make it a leading producer of cotton, tobacco, tea, silk cocoons, and fruit.
