If you talk to people who studied at Oxford, they'll likely say they miss two things: the local pubs and the libraries. The university's main library houses over 5 million books and 50 thousand manuscripts. Some of the pubs date back to the 1200s and are full of tradition and flowing taps. The pubs are open to all (if you can elbow your way in). If you don't have access to some of the libraries, though, you can always opt to visit Blackwell's, the famous and huge bookstore. Legend has it that King Alfred held scholarly discussions in Oxford in 872, but the university wasn't founded officially until 1167. The university doesn't have a campus; its buildings are scattered throughout the town, integrating the two. Some of the country's finest have been educated here, from Prime Ministers to Thomas Hobbes to W.H. Auden. The rest of the county and its lovely Cotswold stone buildings is certainly worth exploring, too. Some of the towns still speak to the wealth that the wool industry once generated for the area. And that MG that you loved (and sometimes hated) came from Abingdon, a town in Oxfordshire that produced the cars until they went out of production in 1980.
