Imagine if L.A. were just a few miles outside of New York City. In Japan, just south of the nation's largest city, Tokyo, lies its second-largest: Yokohama. Despite a population topping 3 million, however, Yokohama falls victim neither to the anonymity of urban sprawl nor the second city syndrome you'd expect of a municipality in Tokyo's shadow. Yokohama is called the Garden City, though its name literally means "City by the Bay." Its waterfront character gives Yokohama a uniquely spacious and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Home to an array of art galleries and boutiques, Yokohama is also the site of Japan's preeminent Chinatown. Why visit Japan just to eat Chinese food? It's not the food that you go for. Yokohama's Chinatown is one of the more colorful and exotic spots in Japan -- plus it has some of the best non-sushi seafood. Yokohama's futuristic downtown is the site of constant international conventions as well as Yokohama Stadium, home to the hometown BayStars of Japanese baseball's Central League. There's even a hockey rink amidst the usual selection of excellent restaurants, Japanese and international. Being a bay city, Yokohama has plenty of good beaches. In fact, so devoted is the city to beach culture that even when it's cold out you can still go to the beach -- indoors. Stop in at "Wild Blue Yokohama," an artificial beach complete with tides and roaring surf. You can even get a tan.
