Niagara Falls is actually a pair of thunderous waterfalls, the larger Horseshoe Falls spanning the border between Canada and the U.S. The two cities that bear the awesome landmark's name look across at one another, the Americans a little more longingly. The Canadian side offers a better deal for the dollar, superior vantage points, and a better environment to view this natural wonder. Legendary for its tacky honeymoon capital motel suites and for a tourist trap strip near the falls that redefines the word gaudy, the Canadian side nonetheless is a lovely, long and wide stretch of green park space largely devoid of cars and tour-buses. All that water aside, there are other reasons millions flock each year to the city. At the end of an ambling parkway drive is Niagara-on-the-Lake, a well-preserved Upper Canada historic town full of shops and period homes and site of the famed Shaw (theatre) Festival. And the Niagara peninsula is Ontario wine country, full of well-regarded vineyards and estate wineries.
