Europe's largest travelling fair makes its base in Kingston-upon-Hull. The carnival celebrated its 700th anniversary in 1993, and 20th century locals still enjoy nearly a fortnight of merriment each year around October 11th. Commonly called Hull, the East Yorkshire city is situated on England's east coast, 330 miles north of London. Hull is a major seaport, and a regional center for some 850,000 people living on both sides of the Humber estuary. Folks cross that water on the world's longest single span suspension bridge. Hull history dates back 800 years. The 17th century saw the town enclosed by walls and a moat, making it a key stronghold during the English Cival War. Docks replaced those walls, and they have since been converted into a leisure center. A marina, the impressive Princes Quay shopping mall, the Queens Gardens and galleries attract lots of visitors to the modern waterfront. Hull natives of note include William Wilberforce, who abolished the slave trade in the early 19th century. It seems that bucking custom is a common Hull theme, as the Bounty of mutiny fame was a product of its long shipbuilding history.
