Montreux's story is a variation on the old "thems that have, they get" theme. Situated on the east end of Lake Geneva (a.k.a. Lac L?man) amid spectacular natural beauty, this resort town has become a mecca for many of the world's great musicians and artists. Lake Geneva itself is Europe's premier inland water body -- 72 km long, 8 km wide on average, and over 300 metres deep. Outdoor recreation options abound in this French-speaking region, known as the Swiss Riviera. The "pre-Alps" rise immediately north of Montreux, and the Alps, including Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn, are within sight. Each summer (since 1967) jazz greats converge on Montreux to create one of the world's greatest jazz festivals. Immortals such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Ella and Aretha are former headliners, while the likes of Elvis Costello, Santana and ZZ Top have added a diverse flair to the Festival. Montreux also annually hosts a Classical Music Festival in its Stravinski Auditorium. That's along with its Comedy Festival and international broadcast media symposia. In more ways than one, the elite come to Montreux to play.
