Maybe it's just coincidence that Schenectady, founded by Arent Van Curler way back in 1661, has one of the oldest curling clubs in the U.S. Whatever the situation, Schenectadians seem predisposed to sliding around on (and sliding roundish objects around on) thick sheets of ice. Union College students like to prove it at the college hockey rink -- open to students when the Division I Skating Dutchmen aren't using it for games or practice. Schenectadians are apt to describe their environs, between the Adirondacks and the Catskills, as "absolutely breathtaking." But since the city is small, Union students tend to rely on fraternities and sororities for social opportunities. Indeed, the Kappa Alpha Society, which claims to be the first "true" college fraternity, was started at Union. Its alumni, appropriately enough, include brewers Adolph Coors and John S. Labatts. The city's electrical industry dates back to the 1880s, when General Electric was established there. The company has since branched out from its New York roots, but still has facilities in Schenectady where, in partnership with the Department of Energy, it is warming up with a "gas turbine system for the 21st century."
