Considering the brainpower in Palo Alto, it's no surprise it was the first U.S. city to jump on the Internet. (It's rumored that the silicon in Silicon Valley actually sprung a leak here first, then worked its way toward San Jose.) Palo Alto's brains come largely from Stanford University (the Harvard of the "Left Coast"), which has made its home here since 1891; the city and school have grown companionably together (not to mention the real estate prices). So to help boost local business, Stanford alumni William Hewlett, along with buddy David Packard, went on to establish one the world's most profitable high tech companies and Palo Alto's largest employer: You guessed it -- Hewlett Packard. Stanford also plays a central role in community spirit and recreation. The Stanford Cardinals have achieved nationwide recognition, winning titles in just about every sport and producing an impressive number of Olympic medalists, particularly swimmers. The city itself was named for a massive pair of redwoods ("tall tree") found growing on the banks of the San Francisquito Creek by Spanish settlers. Although only one of the trees still stands (the other was knocked down in a thunderstorm), the residents of Palo Alto have worked hard to preserve the environment around them. In fact, they bought up nearly half of the San Francisco Bay shoreline and designated it a public nature reserve called the Palo Alto Baylands. To those skeptics who say you can't mix big business with an environmental conscience, Palo Altoans say, "Balderdash."
