The town with the funny name has an even funnier translation. Poh-kip-see, as it's pronounced, is Native American for "reed-covered lodge by the little water place." IBM has been here since 1941, starting off as a munitions maker during WW II, and now employs more than 5,000 techies. Poughkeepsie isn't really a company town, though, and is known just as much for its schools and scenery. Poughkeepsie (pop. 30,000) is a 90-minute train ride from Manhattan. You ride up the Hudson on the Metro North until you see the Poughkeepsie - Highland Bridge that spans the river. Besides Big Blue, Poughkeepsie is the home of Vassar College, a brick-and-ivy, liberal arts school founded by a brewer. Although once a Seven Sisters school, you do see boys on campus these days - it's been coed since 1969. Other excellent area schools are Marist College as well as the Culinary Institute of America (or CIA for short). A short drive north, in Hyde Park, is the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as the Vanderbilt Mansion, two sites that are definitely worth the trip, if just for the views along the Hudson.
