History abounds in Uppsala. Northwest of Stockholm, Uppsala is Sweden's fourth-largest city (pop. 180,000) and the focus of the country's Folklore District. The largest cathedral and the oldest universtiy in Scandinavia are here, as well as a 16th century castle that was the site of many important events in Swedish history. Uppsala's county governor now lives in the castle, which also houses the Uppsala Art Museum. The region developed into a political and religious center between the fifth and 10th centuries. Huge burial grounds from that era are among the local attractions. Through the 13th century, Swedish kings were elected and honored at Mora stenar, a setting of stones just south of the city center. Uppsala became the seat of the archbishop in 1164. The original cathedral burned down in 1245; the present one was consecrated in 1435. The enormous cathedral's twin towers dominate the city's skyline. Because of the university, Uppsala has produced many prominent scientists. Chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, astronomer Anders Celsius and botanist Carolus Linnaeus are among them; six Uppsala scientists have won a Nobel Prize. Visitors can inspect the gardens designed by Linnaeus, whose former residence is now a museum. The city has also inspired greats in art and literature, notably movie maker Ingmar Bergman, who was born here.
