Bright seacoast, serene wooded valleys, pastoral midlands, and gothic horror -- North Yorkshire's got 'em all. Contrasts in this northeast England region are enhanced when one considers the city of York a part of North Yorkshire. Some do, others don't. Along the North Sea coast lie the towns of Scarborough and ancient Whitby. Scarborough is now a bustling resort centre, with a permanent population of around 37,000. To the north, past Robin Hood's Bay, one comes to Whitby, an historic maritime village whose rocky cliffs and gothic architecture inspired chapters of Bram Stoker's "Dracula." Inland attractions include two National Parks. East of Scarborough and Whitby lie the North Yorkshire Moors -- 23,000 hectares of managed forest and moorland, offering great outdoor recreation and an 18-mile railway still run by steam locomotives. Beyond the Moors are 1,769 square kilometers worth of Yorkshire Dales. Visitors there should be conscious, however, of how so much tourism is beginning to pressure wildlife habitat and traditional lifestyles such as sheep farming. With the coastal cities and inland wilderness, North Yorkshire is peppered with charming villages. Those include Boroughbridge with its stone-age Devil's Arrows monoliths, the splendid gardens of Harrogate, as well as Ripon, where a Hornblower has sounded his instrument in the market square at precisely 9:00 each evening for over 1,100 years.
