The mountain has claimed over 400 lives, but still, in peak season over 200 intrepid hikers reach the summit. Once off the mountain, the hikers can be delivered to dinner in a horse drawn carriage or by an electric car (like many of the villages in Valais, gas powered cars are left at the city limits). Although the region is obsessed with skiing, it does sustain itself with beauty and culture, too. Every year, Verbier is host to an international music festival extraordinaire.
